In August The Modern Quilt Guild announced The Basics Challenge with Riley Blake Designs.

Above are the fabrics every modern quilter that is participating received. Each is a fat eighth (9″ x 22″). The quilt guild I belong to (St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild) distributed them to us at our meeting this past Saturday.

Here’s another look at the fabric with swatches from The Modern Quilt Guild blog.

In a nutshell, the challenge is to make something quilted using at least one of the fabrics provided and have it completed by the end of December. In addition to what was provided, you can use only Riley Blake prints or any brand of solids. My quilt guild is requiring the finished item be a quilt that measures a minimum of 24 inches.

After the meeting on Saturday I went home and pretty quickly came up with a design using Microsoft Publisher. It will be a quilt measuring 25 inches square.

I’m really enjoying this challenge. It’s getting me out of my comfort zone with some of the fabrics being used. Colors, scale, designs. As well as with the layout I created for the quilt.

That’s all you’re getting out of me. Mum’s the word for the moment. In the meantime, enjoy some challenge photos posted by users on Instagram.
