Hello! I have some very important info for those of you that run giveaways, contests, promotions — whatever you like to call them. If you are somebody that enters them, then you’ll probably be interested in this as well.

I’m going to use the term giveaway.

First, Facebook does not allow using the timelines of others for a giveaway. That is, if you are running a giveaway you cannot require or give an option for people to share a giveaway on Facebook to obtain an entry. This is nothing new. It’s an existing policy.

You can find this in their Facebook Page Terms.

Personal Timelines must not be used to administer promotions (ex: “share on your Timeline to enter” or “share on your friend’s Timeline to get additional entries” is not permitted).

Second, there is a very important Facebook policy update that goes into effect November 5th and makes two changes. Starting on that date you cannot require somebody to like a Facebook page in order to participate in a giveaway. If you’re running a giveaway on Facebook, people who do not like your Facebook page must be allowed to enter. Also, you cannot offer a giveaway entry in exchange for a page like.

You can find this in a developers blog post from August.

You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.

I hope you found this info helpful. Please be sure to let others know.

  1. OMG, this has bugged the crap out of me for so long. It does happen a lot in the quilting online world. There are a few designers who are guilty of this and then there’s the Rafflecopter entry where to unlock the following entries you must first “like” something on FB. Dumb! I welcome this change, if I understand it correctly. Of course, it will be interesting to see if it is actually followed. Thanks for allowing me to rant!

  2. Interesting. Facebook has blocked me from liking anybody for a month, because I was liking too many sites too quickly (from entering giveaways). So their new policy will solve that problem. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks for sharing this. I for one am happy to hear this. I dont’ do facebook. I also don’t twitter or instagram and lately most of the “giveaways” say you have to like/follow them on facebook, twitter or instagram. THerefore, I can’t enter the giveaway. I’d so much rather enter via email and read what I want, when I want and browse around how I want and Not have to check multiple places to see what’s going on. Probably the only time you will ever hear this… Thank you Facebook!

  4. Thanks so much for sharing this. That is exactly why I quit entering anything. I will look at one just to see what you have to do. it’s so time consuming the way most of them want you to enter.

  5. Thank you so much for posting this!! I am seeing such a surge in the esp. on IG it is disappointing. I am glad FB is getting smart and making our social media experience more enjoyable. I truly appreciate you letting us know of this!!

  6. It’ll be interesting when the Sew Mama Sew giveaway rolls around again (there’s another soon, right?) to see how many people that haven’t seen this update – or ignore it – and still require the FB like for entry.
